San Francisco Backyard Chickens

Every household needs a laying hen (or two, or three)....

Let me introduce you to "the girls", the backyard hens we've had for the last six years.
Actually six years is pretty old for a chicken, even one that's been pampered like a pet, and our coop is more of a retirement home now than a thriving egg palace.

But every so often, trumpets sound, and one of the girls manages to lay an egg.

Then it's quite a happy day on our little farm!
We celebrate by using the egg in a frangipane (almond paste) and I bake a fruit galette - with peaches in the summer, persimmons in the fall, apples in the winter.

Then we light a candle and hope for another egg soon....

This is the only chicken we allow in the house....

The girls and I will be visiting...

  1. What a sweeties !!!

  2. Very sweet! I just read from a friend of mine that she is "ordering" her chickens soon (her first). I didn't know how I thought folks got chickens (esp different breeds) but they can get mailed to you...WOW! Cool!

Cute story and so nice they are now "pets". They really are quite an attractive lot :D

Thanks for sharing with all of us :)
Visiting from My Romantic Home's linky party.

  3. Your girls are gorgeous, Rose! Nice to know some City chicks who live just over the Hill from us in Reno. Glad you found me so I could find you. I've just gotta subscribe to your posts (I need another subscription like an extra ten pounds on my rear, but I can't resist).

I'm missing my daily egg-enriched smoothie tremendously since the Bombshells stopped laying. I'm going to put a lightbulb in the coop this weekend and see if it makes any difference. Fingers crossed!

    1. Really, how frustrating is it to have backyard chickens and eat store-bought eggs?
Treats often work wonders - Saturday is "cracked corn day" around here!
Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a post....

  4. The girls look lovely. Love Chickens! Pat

  5. Your girls look really good for six years! My boyfriends mom had a peking duck that lived to be about 9 and even she laid the occasional egg! I'm you've newest follower (and fellow chicken owner).

    1. Alecia:
Ducks seems to live long lives - years ago we had a mallard, that, no kidding, made it to 18 years.
And this was after surviving a pretty vicious raccoon attack.
Loved having ducks, but in the city, the pond just took up too much room.
Thanks for stopping by and becoming a follower!

  6. They are cuties! I appreciate you linking to Potpourri Friday!

  7. They are super cute! I've been wanting hens for quite some time now.

  8. I would love to have some of these! They make the best gardens. Thank you for joining me at Home Sweet Home!

  9. I want chickens so bad. What a cute candle!!
I'm following, would love to have you stop by the farmhouse porch if you have the time.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
