Mediterranean Climate

That's what we have here in San Francisco, so even in the short days of winter, there's always something surprising in the backyard....
The brugmansia provides lots of fragrant trumpets for indoor flower arrangements, like this one...
The Meyer lemon is covered with tiny lemons as well as last year's crop (ready to use on our broiled fish dinners)...
And there are bright sprays of epidendrum orchids, potted and thriving among the bromeliads on the deck.....
You'd think it was August - there were even enough lavender spikes to put together a small bouquet for the kitchen table....

But this beautiful weather comes at a price.
A Mediterranean climate receives the bulk of its rainfall in the winter months, and this past December set a record as the second driest since 1898.
We need rain, and we need it soon - I'll gladly go without backyard flowers for awhile.

  5. I grew a lot of brugmansia this past summer. I never thought to use them in an indoor arrangement! Mine were all yellow. Your white one is gorgeous. Wishing rain for you!

  6. Jane:
Although brugs don't have much of a "vase life" the fragrance is what makes them such worthy cut flowers.
There's no scent at all during the day, but come early evening the fragrance will literally fill a room.
Really appreciate you taking the time to leave a note...

  8. We're into the cold of winter now. Although, we will have unseasonably warm days off and on. But the daffodils are coming up and the winter honeysuckle is blooming.

  12. Oh, I love the Brugmansia! I never knew what those flowers were when we lived outside of San Francisco. One of the wonderful things about California, is all that grows there! It makes me homesick just thinking about it! lol!
Beautiful post on a cold winter morning!
